Puerto Rico MIHE Workshop

The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus School of Pharmacy is our host for the March 6, 2013 MIHE govcon workshop. The School of Pharmacy of the University of Puerto Rico, originally established as a Department of Pharmacy, and in 1925 organized as the College of Pharmacy, was founded on September 22, 1913 at the Río Piedras Campus. It was the first health professional program to be offered at a higher education level in Puerto Rico, and the first to be accredited. In 1989, the College changed its official name to School of Pharmacy. In 2001, a Pharmacy Practice Residency program was established as a joint effort with VA Caribbean Healthcare Center in San Juan. It is accredited by the American Society for Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) as a postgraduate one year pharmacy residency program.  The School of Pharmacy is also a provider of continuing education since 1979. Its Continuing Education and Professional Studies Division is accredited by the Health Professional Examining Boards of Puerto Rico as a continuing education provider for most health professionals in the Island. The University of Puerto Rico – School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Parking

The college will provide parking for all attendees at no cost. Parking is in close proximity (walking distance) to the workshop location. A campus map and additional details will be provided after event registration.

Transportation

San Juan, Puerto Rico has many public transit options to accommodate all transportation needs for individuals attending the workshop. The Departamento de Transportación y Obras Públicas (DTOP) runs the public transportation system. The whole system, including the buses, trains and publicos (public vans) is called Alternativa de Transporte Integrado (ATI). The bus system is called the Autoridad Metropolitana de Autobuses (AMA). The light-rail train system is called the Tren Urbano. The whole public transportation system is most prominent in the San Juan metro area. Airport: Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is close to the event location and nearby hotels. It is serviced by several major airlines.

Taxi: Taxi service is available from the airport to local destinations.  You can hail a taxi in the street, or you can call one to come pick you up. If you don’t want to rent a car, the next best option is taking taxis around the metro area.

Bus service: Puerto Rico’s transportation system within the San Juan metro area is pretty good. However, the public transportation system does not encompass the entire island.
